Dowry: A devastating tradition

Dowry means the transfer of wealth by the brides parents to the groom at the time of marriage. The another name of dowry is jahez.
Some people relate it to the marriage of Hazrat Ali(R.A) and bibi Fatima(R.A) in which Prophet (PBUH) gave sone household items to Hazrat Ali (R.A) but the purpose of giving these items was that Hazrat Ali (R.A) did not have much to start a life with and the Prophet (PBUH) gave him merrily and by his willingness. As far as it is given willingly by the brides parents it is not that bad but nowadays some people have madr it a tradition and consider it compulsory. The grooms family makes a long list and hands over to to the btides parent and demands to arrange all the things before marriage takes place. In many cases when the brides parents fail to arrange the dowry the groom refuses to marry the bride and her parents are afraid of society’s reaction. This trait has become the most worrisome for women. There are many women. Whose age of marriage have passed but are still unmarried because no one accepts her until she brings tons of dowry with her. According to several surveys there is a myth in most illiterate societies that the higher the dowry amount, in terms of furniture, electronic, kitchenware and gold, the greater will bhe the women’s status in marital household.
From a long time this tradition has plagued our societies and this must be stopped. Let us raise this topic so high that no father may stress upon the arrangements of dowry of her daughter.

More power to you. What a beautiful pieve of writing and indeed this issue needs to be addressed. People play with lives of other people in the name of dowry.
